Mentoring programmes

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) developed its mentoring programme in early 2006 with the help of current employees within its graduate development programme. The IOC mentoring programme was designed by graduates for graduates. Mentors vary in profession and years of experience. Each year, the mentors and the graduates spend one day training, and based on feedback from this meeting, each graduate is assigned to a mentor. They are required to meet face-to-face at least once per month.

In the Pilbara, the mentoring programme is supported by an enthusiastic team of volunteers who support the graduates in settling into their roles and the business, and prepare graduates for professional advancement by assisting them to develop internal networks and providing tacit organisational knowledge. Like the Iron Ore Company of Canada programme, mentors meet regularly with the graduates using the wisdom of their experience and professional training to provide a unique perspective on employment matters, career planning and problem solving.
