Corumbá
Rio Tinto Iron Ore's Corumbá operations are located in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, in western Brazil.
Consultation and the analysis of community needs have become an important way in which the business operates in Corumbá.
In undertaking the expansion of the Corumbá mine and the installation of the Steel Centre on site, we have sought to understand stakeholders concerns and opportunities by conducting baseline studies. We have also initiated socio-economic studies of the communities of Corumbá, including the municipality and districts of Antonio Maria Coelho, Porto Esperança and Albuquerque, and in Ladario, Mato Grosso do Sul.
These studies help establish closer dialogue between Rio Tinto Iron Ore and community stakeholders by giving communities a say in the decision-making process for Rio Tinto Iron Ore's projects.
Similar studies are planned in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay where Rio Tinto Iron Ore exploration programmes are being undertaken.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore's community investment programmes are an integral part of promoting economic growth and capacity building in communities at Corumbá.
The Local Economic Base Diversification programme identifies and creates successful business opportunities for community members. The programme has the support of wide-ranging sponsors, including local, state and federal government agencies, local community organisations, non-government organisations (NGOs), micro-credit institutions and financial agencies. The programme provides market research, training, technical assistance, managerial assistance and marketing support for local businesses.
The Local Economic Base Diversification Programme, along with the Local Suppliers Development Programme, helps generate social and economic growth through indirect job opportunities for residents of Corumbá and Ladário.
In addition to community-based programmes targeting business and economic growth in the local community, Rio Tinto Iron Ore also invests in programmes to assist disadvantaged groups in the community. The Social Inclusion Support Programme specifically focuses on providing education and training opportunities in improving health, income generation and quality of life. The programme has also contributed to the social integration of migrants in Corumbá.
These programmes will help ensure that local communities continue to benefit from Rio Tinto Iron Ore's activities beyond the life of its mining operations at Corumbá.
