Apprenticeships and traineeships

Rio Tinto's Iron Ore group has a strong commitment to apprentice training as a source for future employment. Our operations are significant employers of apprentices and trainees in their communities. Our apprentice training is managed and supervised by dedicated and experienced training officers.

We offer an extensive range of trade apprenticeships, including:

  • mechanical fitting
  • metal fabrication
  • electrical
  • automotive
  • business administration
  • drafting
  • information technology

To be considered for an apprenticeship, applicants must be motivated, enthusiastic and have a demonstrated interest in their chosen field. It is also necessary to have secondary-education passing grades as well as meeting necessary fitness requirements. Detailed requirements may vary in different countries and locations.

Apprenticeships are advertised internally and in newspapers each year.

Trainee employment

In addition to apprentice training, we have a strong commitment to traineeships. In particular, we encourage applications from indigenous members of our local communities.

We offer a range of traineeships in administrative and human resources.

At our Pilbara operations in Western Australia, opportunities for trainees are available across various sites. These traineeships provide exposure to and skills development in a diverse range of departments within our operations and are offered over a one-year term.

Applicants for trainee positions should have:

  • a demonstrated interest in a mining career
  • enthusiasm and motivation to succeed
  • acceptable levels of competence in literacy and numeracy, typically a completed secondary education with good marks or equivalent, or be able to pass an extensive literacy and numeracy test.

Trainee positions are advertised internally and in various newspapers each year.
