'Colours of our Country' art exhibition

The 'Colours of Our Country' art exhibition returned for a successful second year to Perth. The exquisite display of indigenous artwork, created by local artists is one of the largest collections of Pilbara indigenous art ever shown in Perth. All the art was specially commissioned with more than 100 pieces - including paintings, woodwork artefacts and textiles - created by 25 artists on display. The exhibition supports the development of a vibrant and sustainable art industry in the Pilbara with 100 per cent of all sales going directly to the artists.

The exhibition ran during October and November.

Roebourne Women's Dinner

Over 70 women attended a dinner in Roebourne on 25 June, sponsored by ESS, Alliance Contracting, Whim Creek Copper Mine and Rio Tinto Iron Ore. The dinner was a chance for women from across the Pilbara, indigenous and non-indigenous to come together to discuss women's issues in the region.

Two successful Wanu Wanu cultural awareness courses where completed this year, with excellent feedback from participants. With support from Rio Tinto Iron Ore, teachers from Tom Price had the opportunity to hear first hand about cultural differences that teachers need to be aware of in schools.

Performing Arts Liaison

Youth from Tom Price, Roebourne and Karratha schools, including the Magik Binbala group recently performed at the Fenacle, Nameless and Croc Eisteddfod Festivals. The recent performances showcase talent developed through Rio Tinto Iron Ore's Performing Arts Specialist Liaison Officer, Michael Leslie. The program conducts activities in schools to develop and enhance social skills through performing arts. Performing arts activities include acting, dancing, singing and song writing which aim to develop social skills. In 2006, 600 students both Indigenous and non-Indigenous were involved in the program.
