Community Advisory Panel (CAP)

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) works closely with local communities to build an understanding of how the company impacts its environment, and how both the company and the communities can create opportunities for each other for long-term sustainable success.

The Community Advisory Panel (CAP) - an initiative that was started in Labrador City in 2006 and in Sept-Îles in 2007 - aims to provide a consultative forum to further these relationships by promoting the principles of Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM).

Comprising an IOC chairperson and representatives from the local community, the CAP meet quarterly to discuss issues of mutual interest and play an active role in a variety of matters from environmental issues to internal company strategies.

In tandem with CAP, studies have been conducted in 2005 and 2006 by external consultants to get a better feel for what issues concern local communities most. Findings concluded that some concerns are shared between the two communities whereas others are area specific:

Labrador City

  • Community air quality
  • Dust emissions 
  • Youth movement, recruitment and training 
  • Housing and transportation

Sept-Îles
