Rio Tinto's port facilities at Dampier and Cape Lambert in the Pilbara region are run and managed by Pilbara Iron, a world-class asset manager which operates and maintains all mining, rail, port and power facilities in the Pilbara on behalf of the asset owners.

Dampier

Location 250 kilometres from the nearest inland mine site.
Operation Two ship-loading terminals located at Dampier - Parker Point and East Intercourse Island.  Each terminal has facilities for train unloading, product stockpiling and blending and ship loading.
Working arrangements Employees at the port facilities reside in the nearby towns of Dampier and Karratha.
Ship loading capacity

140 million tonnes per annum. 

Turn around time 24 and 36 hours to load a ship.
Accreditation Ore is sampled and analysed prior to shiploading as per ISO  iron ore standards. The quality system is certified to ISO 9001:2000.
First year of operation Parker Point commenced 1966; East Intercourse Island commenced 1972.

100 per cent Rio Tinto.

Parker Point: Two car dumpers, four shipping berths and two shiploaders

Cape Lambert

Location About 40 kilometres north of Karratha.
Operation Train-dumping, primary and secondary crushing and screening, ore stockpiling and blending, and ship loading.
Working arrangements Employees at the port facilities reside in the nearby town of Wickham.
Ship loading capacity

Approximately 58 million tonnes per annum; expansion underway to 80 million tonnes per annum. 

Turn around time 24 and 36 hours to load a ship.
Accreditation Ore is sampled and analysed prior to shiploading s per ISO ion ore standards. The quality system is certified to ISO 9001:2000.
First year of operation 1972
Ownership

Joint venture between Rio Tinto (53 per cent) and Robe River.

Assets

Service wharf, ore wharf (one of the highest, longest and deepest wharves in Australia at 2.8 kilometres long and 30 metres high, two shiploaders servicing 3 berths, each with a draft of 19.4 metres.
