Safety

A safe workplace for our employees is essential to the continued success of our business.

We seek to adopt best practice in health and safety management systems and performance. Safety performance standards cover our principle hazards:

  • Isolations
  • Electrical safety
  • Vehicles and driving
  • Working at heights
  • Confined spaces
  • Cranes and lifting equipment
  • Underground safety (Canadian operations)
  • Aviation
  • Molten metals

Ensuring all employees and contractors work in a healthy and safe environment is achieved through the implementation of policies, systems and procedures by dedicated teams of safety professionals at our sites. Our focus is to continue to improve this performance by concentrating on behavioural-based safety systems.

The Iron Ore Health, Safety, Environment and Quality Policy states the intentions, commitment and principles of the Iron Ore group in relation to the management of health, safety, environment and quality.

Our performance is measured by reportable injuries to local regulatory authorities and annually in our Sustainable Development Reports. Recordable injuries are reported to Rio Tinto and include lost day injuries (LDIs), restricted work day injuries (RWDIs) and medical treatment cases (MTCs). Lost day injuries and restricted work day injuries are combined to form a measure known as lost time injuries (LTIs).
